Reception at Porsche Charlottesville

The event filled weekend began with a wine and beer reception at Porsche Charlottesville. The dealership provided an outstanding array of hors d’oeuvres all of which were beautifully presented. We had 80 members in attendance for an evening of great socializing and reconnecting from our last big event last December.

We would like to thank Anita Barber from Flow Corporate and Laura Renigar of Porsche Charlottesville for their support in this event and all they did to allow it to be as successful as it was.

None of our events happen without the support of our members who provide their time to ensure a great event.

Michael Scott Tucker Drive

One of the things most Porsche owners enjoy about their cars is the driving pleasure they provide. There is nothing better than driving together with your friends and experience some organized open road motoring. Back in February we were asked to organize a driving tour as part of the Spring Fling weekend activities. Looking at the participation numbers we determined to develop two separate routes. This allowed us to minimize congestion during the drive and more importantly, at the mid-route break points.

Randy Johnson designed a southern route through Western Fluvanna, Southern and Western Albemarle Counties while Dan Graff laid out a route through Northeastern Albemarle, Southwestern Greene, and Western Albemarle Counties. Both routes were about sixty miles long and incorporated a variety of twisty bits, elevation changes and scenic views. Once the map reconnaissance was complete, we entered the routes into the “Ride with GPS” app in order to provide moving map and written route guidance functionality for participants.

During the process of developing and finalizing the preparations for the driving tours, one of our beloved members, Michael Scott Tucker, a longtime PCA member, lost his life. Mike was a frequent participant in our activities and always ready to help out with our driving tours. We renamed the driving tour of the Spring Fling in his honor.

With route design behind us, the fun part began with test drives to verify that the road conditions were acceptable for a club driving tour. Next, we lined up the necessary group leads for each route and began the process of familiarizing them with the “Ride with GPS” app and the roads they would be driving. Multiple test drives were needed to fully acquaint the group leads with the routes. We have great volunteers with some of them having to travel as much as an hour to get to the starting point in order to participate in the route familiarization drives. Anticipating the building enthusiasm for the Driving Tours, we recruited a number of reserve group leads and prepared them in the same manner as the group leads.

Registration started slow and steady with our numbers climbing to more than fifty participants when registration closed on April 17th . We enjoyed a strong turnout at the Spring Fling Kick-Off at Porsche of Charlottesville on Friday evening April 19th which resulted in additional members asking to join us the next morning for the driving tours. With the large turnout we ended up leveraging all of our reserve group leads in order to maintain optimal group sizes with the end result being twelve group leads and two sweepers.

Saturday morning April 20th arrived cool and sunny with the promise of beautiful weather for the driving tours and our destination at the car corral at King Family Vineyards. Given the strong turnout we almost overwhelmed the staging parking lot at Porsche of Charlottesville. With a little tweaking of our parking plan, everyone was accommodated. We put a great deal of effort into trying to effectively manage the tour group organization. We provided each Group lead and group participant with a listing of their group members along with contact information, a route map, and written route instructions. Group leads took care of getting the necessary signatures on the PCA waiver forms for their group members.

The driver’s safety briefing started on time at 9:25 AM. The Northern Route group were in their cars at 9:45 AM and headed off. The individual Northern Route groups were staged at about two-minute intervals.

The Northern Tour Group went north on Rt. 20 to Stony Point, through Watts, Amicus and Williams Corner and from there on Rt 810 to Maybelle’s Market in Dyke, VA for the mid-point break. Hat tip to Maybelle’s Market for a very tidy facility with excellent sandwiches and tasty country ham biscuits. After the break we departed to the South on Rt 810 and followed it through Nortonsville, Boonesville, Montfair and White Hall to Crozet finally arriving at Kings Family Vineyards at around 11:30 AM. The second leg of the Northern Route provided for some great twisty bits and beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain views.

The Southern Route staged and departed South on Rt. 20, following Rt 250 East to the Milton Road through Milton, Woodridge, Keene, and Scottsville where their mid-point break was taken at the Scottsville Food Lion. Upon departing their mid-point break they drove West on Rt 6 traveling through Porters, Esmont, Alberene, North Garden, Batesville, and Greenwood before arriving at Kings Family Vineyard. The Southern Route featured some great twisty bits both before and after Scottsville. Beautiful mountain views in the Greenwood and King Family Vineyards areas made for a spectacular day. Many thanks to the hours of preparation for this event by the group leads Billy Bennett, Richard Tabor, Alvin Ago, Bates McLain, Jon Aronson, Ray Chung, Bob McCabe, Steve Johnson, Michael Murphy, and Brycen Hudock and the Sweepers, Jonathan Perelman and Steve Upman.

See you next time.
Dan Graff

King Family Vineyards Car Corral

We all love Porsches on the lawn and the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains to make for a memorable day. For a second year, King Family Vineyards has invited us to display our cars in such a beautiful setting. We had approximately 60+ cars on the lawn and over 80 members for Saturday’s event.

Great weather, Porsches and the wonderful members of the Shenandoah Region created another fantastic event for our Spring Fling Weekend. We welcomed several new members to the region this weekend. They could not have had a better first experience. A new participant and a non-PCA member, Tripp Moore from Harrisonburg, ventured over the mountain Saturday to the King Family Vineyards. Tripp was warmly welcomed by many of our members. Upon his return home that afternoon, he promptly joined PCA. We look forward to seeing you at our next event Tripp.

A People’s Choice award was presented to the three cars that garnered the most attention. The winners of the People's Choice were:

  • 1 st Place - John Odden, 2021 911 Turbo S
  • 2 nd Place - Engelbert Muelhaupt, 1971 911T
  • 3rd Place - Joe Milbank, 2021 718 Spyder

In conjunction with the People’s Choice Award, the manager of the vineyard chooses his favorite car. This year’s winner was Brycen Hudock’s 2010 911 Turbo in beautiful Carrara White.

King Family Vineyards generously donated a bottle of their various wines to the winners.

Shenandoah PCA small logo New Member Dinner Party at the Auto Carsortium

The region hosted a New Member Dinner Party at Jason Robson's Carsortium in Staunton, VA. We had 32 new members, spouses/significant others along with 11 board members and invited guests.

We enjoyed hors 'dourves, a full complement of beverages and a delicious catered Italian dinner. Dottie Dilts provided homemade cake for dessert. Joe Questel, Ted Rabusseau and their spouses organized the event and did an outstanding job for our new members.

John Odden
Membership Chairman

Sunday afternoon the new members of the PCA Shenandoah region met with leadership and a few members at the Auto Carsortium in Staunton Va. The Carsortium is a collection of cars on consignment or storage and is a warehouse of nice cars ready to be driven and viewed. It is a great back drop for the event and allows for good conversation and eye candy for auto enthusiasts of all types of cars. Lots of Porsches are always on hand so this made for an ideal spot to break the ice with new members and to get new friendships formed.

30 plus people came together to learn more about our region, meet the officers and most importantly ask questions what we are about, what types of things do we do, and where they may fit in. A questionnaire was given to each member to find facts about other members. A dinner was provided, and it was an interesting afternoon. As you can see, there were a bunch of nice and rare cars around and no one overlooked a car they wish they could take home…………for a price.  What a great collection of cars, with specialized technology and design, no matter what the make. Special thanks to John Odden who is our membership chair to bring this together and continue to focus on the experience of our members who are new to our group. We hope to continue to see these new members around, please reach out and say hi and get them involved.
