Shenandoah Region 2019–2020 Board Election Results
by Bill Blodgett, Election Chairman
Posted 2018 December 1

The votes received during the October 30–November 20 balloting period have been counted and validated. The Election Chairman (Bill Blodgett) congratulates the newly elected 2019–2020 Shenandoah Region Officers:

  • President: Mark Francis
  • Vice President: Jeff Elmore
  • Vice President: Mark Sackson
  • Secretary: Michael Evans
  • Treasurer: Jeff Blatter

Mark Francis–President

I joined PCA in 1992 as an associate member on my father's membership while in college. We were members of the Potomac Region. We mostly attended social events until getting involved in autocross and driver's education events in 1998. I became a DE instructor and started PCA Club Racing in 2000. After a short stint as assistant editor of der Vorgänger (Potomac's monthly newsletter) I took over as editor and served in that position from late 2000 through 2006. I was helper and event photographer for the rally program when my former wife served as rally chair. Currently still active as an instructor with Potomac Region, though I haven't done any racing in four years.

What I would like to accomplish during my term in office is to get more members participating in club events. Maybe encourage more to come to the local cars and coffee events, more driving events like rallies, tours, or just social events. All too often, many join the club for a few years, then let their membership lapse because they just aren't that active in the club. Communication is key.

Jeff Elmore–Vice President

I see myself contributing to our club in some very specific ways. As an autocrosser I would like to become more active in the administration and planning of our events. I am active autocrossing with other area clubs and I believe my input could help to increase participation in our autocrosses, managing scheduling conflicts with the other clubs, and making their members aware of our upcoming events. I feel that I could also contribute to SRPCA's rebranding initiative.

As a state-level Adult Education practitioner, I have been involved in rebranding and outreach strategies for Adult Ed programs throughout Virginia. I'm confident that my skills and experience will transfer over to SRPCA's efforts. In particular, I am excited about opportunities to expand SRPCA's social media presence.

I have been a member of SRPCA since 2006. I currently own two Porsches: a 2000 Boxster S autocross car and a 1999 Carrera 4. Between 2007–2009, I authored more than 20 Tech Tactics articles for the SRPCA's newsletter, The Heat Exchanger. This effort grew into RennZenn, a (very!) small business performing maintenance, performance, and detail work on Porsches and other automobiles. I live in Palmyra with my wife Ginger and our two Bassett Hounds, Turbo and Sadie.

Mark Sackson–Vice President

The second thing I did after buying my Porsche was to join PCA. The first was to replace the IMS, RMS and install a new clutch.

I have enjoyed the club. It is a very warm and welcoming group of people.

As far as the brand is concerned, I've wanted a Porsche since I was in junior high school. I had a long delay: after college I lived in NYC for 16 years, making Porsche ownership impractical.

I have served on both nonprofit boards and social club boards for many years. If I had an objective for our club it would be to increase membership. There are a lot of Porsches in our area, and I'm guessing only a small percentage belong to the club. I would work to figure out how to reach theses owners and show them how much fun and how much more they can appreciate these wonderful machines.

I grew up in Scarsdale, NY, graduated from Hobart College with a BA, and received an MBA from The Lubin School of Business.

I lived and worked in NYC for about 16 years, raising three boys. I moved to Charlottesville about 15 years ago, where we had our fourth child, a girl. About 10 years ago I decided to try my hand at teaching. I'm a substitute teacher and work to keep our farm going.

Michael Evans–Secretary

As Secretary I want to better document the Club's activities with articles and video recordings of fun events so that members may see their cars. This will include working towards a newer website and having a place for Club members to share their own pictures and video.

Jeff Blatter–Treasurer

I grew up in Crozet, attended Western Albemarle High school and VA Tech. I learned how to drive a stick in a 1966 Porsche 912 and owned a series of unreliable foreign sports cars. After college, I moved out west and worked in corporate finance in Boulder, CO. In the early 2000's, my wife and I sold everything and moved to Bozeman, MT where I worked as a fishing guide and outfitter in the summer and did tax work in the winter. I returned to Charlottesville 4 years ago and work as a financial planner for a local firm. I am a Certified Financial Planner and an Enrolled Agent with the IRS. On nice days I drive my emerald green Porsche Carrera Cabriolet.

Cayenne launch photo

by Jim Condon
Posted 2018 November 26

Flow Porsche of Charlottesville hosted a launch party for the third-generation Cayenne at the scenic King Family Vineyards near Crozet on the evening of November 8. It was well attended by PCA members from the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Regions, plus other area "car guys." A wine bar and excellent heavy hors d'oeuvres added to the draw. To see the photo gallery covering this event, click here.

The third generation 2019 Cayenne includes "glass cockpit" with touch-sensitive controls and increased power from smaller engines. The capital-T Turbo model now produces 550 hp and, with the aid of Sport Chrono, will launch the massive Cayenne from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. After an introductory presentation by Will Reifsteck of Flow Porsche, Chris Beverage and Ray Tinsley unveiled the new Cayenne for all to see and sit in.

Fall Foliage
photo Fall Foliage Tour 13th Annual Fall Foliage Drive
by Hank Weil, President
Posted 2018 November 3

It's that time of year again to take a drive thru the countryside of Virginia and enjoy the fall foliage. The 13th Annual Fall Foliage Shenandoah Region drive held on October 21st took us back to Sperryville. Randy Bell had previously guided us on this route two years ago. It was so delightful, that we decided to take it again.

A total of 39 Porsche enthusiasts participated in 23 Porsches and a Jaguar. The participants included Bill Blodgett, Hal & Cyndi Fredrickson, Tim Messer, John & Michelle Odden, Charles & Genie Passut, Dick Pitini, Mark & Bert Sackson, Hank & Jolly Weil, Gary Hunter, Jeff Blatter & Karen Yonovitz, Bob Duntley, John & Susan Carpenter, Lynne Taylor, Zach Connor & Desiree Choe, Engelbert & Claudia Muelhaupt, Cam & Lisa Abernathy, Ray Olsen, Roger Borsink, Jack & Heidi Adams, Michael Evans, Henry Haefele & Kathy Winteringham, Walter & Tina Adamek, William & Will Lansing and Troy Adamek & Lisa Humpage. What a great turnout for a really fun drive thru the inviting Virginia countryside.

We gathered at the Dunkin Donuts, a very short drive off Interstate 64, in Zion Crossroads. After some fresh brewed coffee, a donut or two and socializing, Hank Weil conducted the driver's meeting and we headed to our Porsches. Hank lead the drive; Tim Messer was the Group leader and John Odden the sweep. John had arranged for a Gordonsville police officer to ensure that the group was able to stay together as we drove around the roundabout in Gordonsville onto route 231. This was a great plan.

Off we went!! Our driving tour took us on some fantastic country roads on routes 15 & 231 thru Greene, Orange, Madison, Culpeper and Rappahannock counties. About 65 minutes later, we arrived in Sperryville and parked at our destination, the Headmasters Pub. We did not lose track of anyone during the drive.

It was a beautiful day in the 70's, but unfortunately, the foliage had just begun to turn and the colors were muted to non-existent. Nonetheless, it was a fabulous drive over 55 miles from Dunkin Donuts to the Headmasters Pub.

When we arrived at the Pub, the management had set up tables for us in the large back game room where we sat at four tables and had a wonderful time socializing, talking Porsches and renewing old acquaintances. We ordered from the Pub's October menu and the food and drink was delicious. I don't believe any of us left hungry.

What a great gathering and another successful Shenandoah Fall Foliage drive. If you haven't taken the opportunity to participate in one of the Shenandoah drives, I highly recommend it. If you have participated in one I'm sure you will agree it is worth doing again.

Remember it's not just about the cars, but the people too!!!!

Posted 2018 October 25

The Shenandoah Region hosted a New Member Event on October 7th at Hank and Jolly Weil's home in Crozet. We had 24 in attendance and everyone had an outstanding time. All of the new members can now understand why we say, "It's not just the cars, its the people!"

Ed and Donna Rehorn brought their 1974 914 Porsche. Kevin Sheets drove his gorgeous, newly purchased, graphite blue metallic 2018 Boxster. David Seidenfeld brought his father who was visiting from Pittsburg and thoroughly enjoyed the cars along with the great conversations (David's Dad is a long time car lover). Everyone enjoyed meeting David and Amber Tyson who drove up from Scottsville.

Hank and Jolly's neighbors were overwhelmed with the eye candy parked on both sides of the street.

The food was catered by Smoked Taphouse & Kitchen which is now my favorite barbecue restaurant!

Michelle Odden, always the team player, helped with the planning and food presentation which I could not have done without her. Many thanks to Hank and Jolly Weil for opening up their home and their wonderful hospitality.

Eric Huggins

by Jim Condon       Posted 2018 September 14

A forecast of afternoon rain didn't stop the final autocross of the 2018 season on Sunday, September 8 at the Augusta Government Center parking lot in Verona. Rick Ebinger designed a fast course to give everyone a good shot at getting six dry runs, but a light rain moved in during the fourth heat. Notably, Sherry Westfall made a 48.777 s run in the rain, a sure sign of smooth driving, to win the Ladies class. To see the photo gallery covering this event, click here.

The top five finishers were all within one second of each other, led by Will King (45.207 s) and Ray Schumin (45.444 s) in Honda S2000s. Close behind were the three quickest Porsches driven by Eric Huggins (45.830 s), Jim Condon (45.896 s), and Jeffrey Elmore (46.005 s).

The class winners were:

  • p03    Mike Kilmer (1983 911 SC)               49.415 s
  • p04    Eric Huggins (2006 911 S)                45.830 s
  • p05    Jim Condon (2018 Cayman GTS)       45.896 s
  • i01     Rick Ebinger (1974 914)                   47.162 s
  • lad     Sherry Westfall (2018 Cayman GTS)  48.777 s

by Marty Doherty       Posted 2018 September 4

On Sunday, August 26, 50 Shenandoah Region PCA members gathered to celebrate the Club's 23rd anniversary with a summer picnic at the Market at Grelen, in Somerset, VA. They came from Richmond and its environs, led by John and Michelle Odden and from Charlottesville and points west, led by Mark Doherty and John Pfaltz. The day was bright, the views were sensational, and it didn't rain! To see a photo gallery covering this event, click here.

The program consisted of a Club Sponsor award presented to Mike and Ana Kilmer for the sponsor banners displayed during the Richmond Porsche Meet by Hank Weil, President. Mike received a plaque with a model of his Porsche! Three door prizes went to the following lucky attendees:

  • Tim Messer — an Xpel front bumper application for a Porsche, provided by Capital Autobahnd
  • Mike Kilmer — a gift certificate from Detailers Domain
  • John Pfaltz — a gift certificate to Note Bene Restaurant

This event also benefited the Feedmore Food Bank in Richmond and the Blue Ridge Food Bank in Charlottesville. The Club issued checks totaling $260, including a donation from Beverly McNeill.

IMSA Michelin GT Challenge and PorschePlatz at VIR
by Jim Condon       Posted 2018 August 23

The top races of this multiday event at VIR took place on Sunday, August 19. As usual this summer, heavy rain was predicted, but all of the races were completed on a dry track. The PorschePlatz tent was set up on NASCAR Bend this year, not just after Turn 4 as before. Shenandoah Region members in attendance on Sunday included Cam & Lisa Abernethy, Kim Butcher, Jim Condon & Sherry Westfall, Howie Dunbrack, Michael Evans, Dan Graff, Steve McCaughan, John Odden, Dick Pitman, Alex Smith, Bill Speidell, Steve Upman, and Keith Welty. To see the photo gallery from this event, click here.

After the early morning practice session, the first race was the Porsche GT3 Cup (platinum), with best lap times about 1 minute, 49 seconds. Next up in the morning was the Lamborghini Super Trofeo. In the PorschePlatz, a representative from Michelin described their race tires, answered questions from the audience, and gave a set of tires to a lucky winner. Michael Levitas and the TPC racing team told us about their GT3 Cup efforts.

The Michelin GT Challenge ran from about 1 PM to 3:45 PM. Sherry Westfall and Dan Graff won passes to the Porsche pit area during the race, were given an explanatory tour of the pits, and got to watch Porsche GTLM car #912 come in for a pit stop. Dan made a short video of the pit stop; click on the arrow in the image below to play it.

Porsche #911 led the race from lap 32 to lap 40, when it caught fire at the top of the climbing esses and had to drop out. #912 driven by Earl Bamber and Laurens Vanthoor finished fifth in GTLM, with best lap times 1 minute, 43 seconds. Patrick Long and Christina Neilsen drove the Porsche #58 car to second place in GTD with lap times as fast as 1 minute, 46 seconds.

Selected race results:

  • Porsche GT3 Cup (platinum), first place: Zacharie Robichon
  • Porsche GT3 Cup (platinum), second place: Trenton Estep
  • Porsche GT3 Cup (platinum), third place: Roman De Angelis
  • GTLM, first place: BMW #25
  • GTLM, fifth place: Porsche #912 driven by Earl Bamber & Laurens Vanthoor
  • GTLM, DNF–fire: Porsche #911 driven by Patrick Pilet & Nick Tandy
  • GTD, first place: Lexus #14
  • GTD, second place: Porsche #58 driven by Patrick Long & Christina Nielsen

Richard Gray's 2004 Turbo

by Jim Condon       Posted 2018 August 18

The threat of afternoon rain hung over Autocross #4 on Sunday, August 12 at the Augusta Government Center parking lot in Verona, VA, so we started a bit earlier than usual. Fortunately the sunny weather held out longer than predicted and we all got in our usual six runs on dry pavement. Rick Ebinger designed a course that with a long east-west straight that ended in a U-turn just before the flat field to the east. Drivers who braked too late demonstrated how to let the smoke out of their tires (see the photo gallery covering this event by clicking here). Then, instead of having fun runs afterward, we quickly picked up the still-dry cones just before the rain hit.

Jonathan Newhall's 42.806 s was the FTD, Jim Condon was the "first loser" at 43.736 s, and Richard Gray came in third with a 43.857 s time.

The class winners were:

  • p02    Michael Klemann (2010 Panamera)    49.611 s
  • p03    Mike Kilmer (1983 911 SC)               47.290 s
  • p04    Jeffrey Elmore (1999 Carrera 4)        44.915 s
  • p05    Jim Condon (2018 Cayman GTS)       43.736 s
  • i01     Jonathan Newhall (1973 914)            42.806 s

Drive the Plank
by Hank Weil       Posted 2018 August 11

After almost a week of heavy rain in Albemarle County, our Saturday, August 4 "Drive the Plank" tour led by Tim Messer was welcomed with "Carolina" blue skies and somewhat mild conditions. A total of 39 drivers and navigators participated with 20 Porsches, a Maserati, a BMW Z4, and a Mini Cooper. The participants included Mark & Marty Doherty, Hal & Cyndi Fredrickson, Dan Kuchenberg & Paula Ironmonger, Jason Wavell & Victoria Mason, Tim & Andrea Messer, John & C. R. Odden (John's Dad), Charles & Genie Passut, Dick Pitini, Bruce Russell, Mark Sackson & Jim Ballheim, Bruce Vlk, David & Nancy Wallace (FSR), Bill & Sara Barony (FSR), Hank & Jolly Weil, Tony Wilson, Charlie & Robin Winzer, Steve Ham, Shannon & Kathy Kennedy, Kevin Sheets, Michelle & Stew Whitehurst, Jeff & Ginger Elmore, Shawn Pharr, and Steve & Penny Heim. What a great turnout for a really fun drive thru the Virginia countryside.

"If you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plan" is a lyric from an old country song. It could also have been our theme song for the day. Although the route had been driven three hours prior to the drive, we ran into our first surprise within the first three miles. A full road crew had appeared, complete with dripping blacktop that no Porsche driver would want to drive through. This led to a quick decision to change our route to go around the construction. Many thanks to Andrea Messer for jumping out of the lead car to quickly explain the situation to everyone and Steve Ham for offering her a ride out to Devil's Backbone.

We were able to rejoin our route three miles later and although the mileage figures were now off, the basic directions held true. We appeared to form a tight group as we headed west along Carters Mountain Road and onto historic Plank Road. Our second major complication happened along Plank Road as a tree branch fell somewhere between two cars within the group. Many thanks to whoever jumped out of their Porsche and quickly solved the problem. Although the tree limb and traffic on Highway 151 caused some separation, we all arrived at Devils Backbone Basecamp and Brewpub safe and sound, hungry and thirsty. Although the pub was somewhat crowded, the food was good and the beer was cold. All in all, it turned out to be a very successful drive on a beautiful summer day. As Hank likes to say, "It's not JUST the cars, it's the people." Mahalo everyone for attending.

PCA 2018 Public Service Awards: Shenandoah Region Honorable Mention
by Mark Doherty       Posted 2018 August 1

Michael Soriano, PCA National Awards Chair, has announced that the Shenandoah Region PCA has been recognized by PCA as Honorable Mention for the 2018 Public Service Awards, as part of the annual National Awards program. The write-up submitted for consideration focused mainly on Literacy Volunteers and Turkeys in the Frunk. Toys for Tots at the Holiday party and the contribution to charity from last year's Summer Picnic would also be examples. I believe we are the smallest region to be so recognized.

2018 Cyaman GTS photo 2018 Cayman GTS driven by Jim Condon and Sherry Westfall Autocross #3 at Verona
by Jim Condon       Posted 2018 July 21

Autocross #3 on Sunday, July 15 attracted 47 drivers to the Augusta Government Center parking lot in Verona, VA. Rick Ebinger designed a course that began with a short straight followed by a right turn that led into a counterclockwise circle, a slalom, a hairpin turn, a drag-race straight, and around some walls of cones to a shot across the starting straight to the finish line. It allowed two cars on course simulaneously for more runs while the weather held out. Even so, the event was truncated by a mid-afternoon thunderstorm and monsoon, so many drivers in the "other" group made only five of the usual six runs. As Rick pointed out, nobody would have made their fastest run in the rain anyway. To see the photo gallery covering this event, click here.

The FTD = 41.888 s went to Jacin Lisner in his 2006 Z06, which was 0.057 s ahead of Chris Cann's 2004 Z06. Jonathan Newhall's 42.224 s was the fastest for an "improved" Porsche.

The class winners were:

  • p03    Mike Kilmer (1983 911 SC)               46.404 s
  • p04    Jeffrey Elmore (1999 Carrera 4)        44.062 s

Porsches at the 2018 RPM concours 2018 Richmond Porsche Meet (RPM) concours cars on the Virginia Crossings lawn. The Porsche corral is in the background.

22nd Richmond Porsche Meet
Virginia Crossings Hotel & Conference Center, June 1–3, 2018
by the 2018 RPM Committee        Posted 2018 June 20

The weather forecast for the 22nd annual Richmond Porsche Meet (RPM) was dubious at best—there was a significant chance of rain, lots and lots of rain the entire weekend. All we can say is that didn't prove to be the case, as the rains held off during the day in Glen Allen for all three days. The clouds did open up Saturday evening. I'm sure there was some trepidation among both those who had registered for the event and those who were planning on being there Saturday morning for the Concours.

To see the photo gallery covering RPM 2018, click here, and click here to see David Ogburn's photos on flikr.

RPM 2018 was held at the lovely Virginia Crossings Hotel and Conference Center, a Tapestry Collection by Hilton in Glen Allen, where participants enjoyed onsite lodging and dining as well as a judged Concours and People's Choice selection in the courtyard on Saturday morning.

But before we get into this year's event, let us provide a little history and give credit to RPM's founder, Alex Smith, a Shenandoah member who first hosted RPM in his back yard and then continued organizing this event for the next 19 years. Many thanks to Alex for his dedication and hard work in creating Shenandoah's signature event! Since then, RPM has grown to attract Porsche enthusiasts and over 100 of their Porsches from Regions all across the East Coast.

Now back to RPM 2018. This year, Shenandoah Region created an RPM Committee to spread the load and to ensure that members and guests experienced an exciting and fun weekend. The Committee chaired by Hank Weil included Mark Doherty, Marty Doherty, Randy Bell, Michael Evans, Clint Shuler, John Odden, Eric Boody, Rick Ebinger, Jason Wavell, Dan Kuchemberg, Tim Foster, Roger Borsink, and Dave Lasch.

Marty Doherty coordinated the volunteer process, and about 30 volunteers from Shenandoah and other PCA regions came together to continue the premier Shenandoah Region event and one of its great traditions.

This Porsche-packed weekend included a visit on Friday to Euroclassics Porsche for a tech session by Lewis Ward, one of the Richmond area's most experienced and recognized detailers. Lewis fielded questions on a variety of detailing subjects and reviewed available products and techniques to improve the paint on our Porsches. After the Tech Session, participants could spend time with other RPM participants in the Hospitality Suite (a new addition for 2018) at Virginia Crossings and then make plans to have dinner either on site or at a number of restaurants in the area.

Saturday morning, our friendly onsite registration team, coordinated by Marty Doherty, performed like a finely tuned Porsche as they checked in guests and sent them on to other volunteers who directed them to parking, registration, and the RPM festivities. An enthusiastic team of volunteers at Info Central handed out maps and gave directions and/or guidance to participants. Shenandoah member and Deputy Manager for Community Operations for Henrico County, Tim Foster, prepared detailed maps, arranged to have the traffic stopped at busy Route 1 for our fun run, and provided his expertise on county regulations and area roads. He also helped with set-up and take-down.

Not only did it not rain, but the courtyard lawn at Virginia Crossings was sufficiently dry and firm so that both the Euroclassics Porsche–sponsored Concours and the Porsche Corral could be held on the grass. Congratulations to our Concours Class winners and to the Euroclassics Concours Best in Show winner George Michaels and his 1991 Porsche 928 GT, for which Euroclassics awarded him a Porsche Driving Experience. We would also like to congratulate John Ashford, the 2018 Gay Jewett People's Choice Award winner with his Aquamarine blue 1957 356A Speedster!

Saturday lunch was a buffet in the Glen Restaurant. Dan Kuchenberg and Paula Ironmonger collected tickets and counted 105 members, sponsors, and guests attending the luncheon.

Jason Wavell led a large group on a lively 90-minute fun run along winding country roads to the Hanover Tavern, where the participants could tour the old tavern and partake in a cold drink before returning to Virginia Crossings for some down time before the Saturday evening Awards Banquet.

The banquet was sponsored by Dorn's Body & Paint. Before dinner, we were entertained as Dan Rowzie recalled his adventures co-driving an early 911 Targa with an IROC racing engine in the 1975 running of the legendary "Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" (a.k.a. Cannonball Run). This is an outlaw race from New York City to Redondo Beach California, which he and his co-pilot completed in 38 hours and 39 minutes. Their on-course adventures included eluding police in New Jersey, getting a ticket in Texas, and passing competitors at 130 mph to psych them out.

RPM wouldn't be RPM without a chance to satisfy our need for speed Sunday morning and to see how fast our Porsches can go on an autocross course laid out by Rick Ebinger and timed by Erik Boody. The course this year was set up with some nice long straightaways on the Richmond Raceway "Bus Lot." The 15 participants were thoroughly challenged by this course. What a great way to end a great RPM weekend. See the autocross article below.

We would like to especially thank Mark Doherty for his behind-the-scenes work with the staff of Virginia Crossings to ensure that all the necessary support equipment was available and that all the planned events at the hotel took place without issues. Thanks to Randy Bell for his unwavering support, his title sponsorship work with Euroclassics Porsche and Dominion Raceway, and his responsibility for set-up and take-down; as well as his being the contact point for the Saturday Fun Run road conditions. The heavy rains prior to RPM caused part of the route to be washed out.

A huge thank you to John Odden for coming up with the idea of a Hospitality Suite that he kept stocked with cold beverages and snacks and for assisting with setting up the Sponsors' banners. A special thank you goes to Jim Condon, our Club's webmaster and photographer, and to David Ogburn for taking great photos of the event posted in this article and on our Club website.

The 996/VW The 996/VW Lemons car: Is it coming or is it going? The Drivers Club at Dominion Raceway
RPM Autocross

by Jim Condon       Posted 2018 June 8

The Drivers Club at Dominion Raceway is the title sponsor of the 2018 RPM autocross. Next year the RPM autocross will be at the Dominion Raceway itself.

Optimistic drivers who braved dire predictions of rain on June 3 were rewarded with a high-speed autocross on a parking lot at the Richmond Raceway Complex (RRC), formerly known as the Richmond International Raceway (RIR). Storms circled around the autocross site but never made a direct hit, so the asphalt remained dry throughout the event and, as an added benefit, the air remained mercifully cool.

The RRC parking lot is very long, so Rick could a design fast course with three straights, a hairpin turn, a slalom, a spiral to bring down speeds just before the finish line, and enough runoff room that everybody stayed clear of the fences.

Jonathan Newhall kept his ailing 914 running long enough to grab another FTD at 45.275 seconds, followed closely by Richard Gray in his 996 Turbo at 45.475 seconds. Engelbert Muelhaupt slayed a number of cones but managed a clean run at 46.004 seconds to fill out the podium. The vehicle attracting the most attention was a 2000 996/VW Lemons car driven by Justin Loehlein, Chris Cann, and Robert Harrison. Inside it is mostly VW and the rear end is the front of a Passat. The front end looks like a Porsche 996, so this chimera has been called a "Porschat". As the photo suggests, it seems to be approaching from both ends.

The class winners were:

  • p03    Mike Kilmer (1983 911 SC)               50.985 s
  • p04    Jeffrey Elmore (1999 Carrera 4)       46.398 s
  • p05    Jim Condon (2018 Cayman GTS)       46.209 s
  • i01     Jonathan Newhall (1973 914)           45.275 s
  • lad     Sherry Westfall (2018 Cayman GTS) 48.318 s
  • Here are all of the results, sorted by time and by class. To see the photo gallery covering this event, click here. Click here to see Engelbert Muelhaupt's photo page on flickr.

Claudia Muelhaupt's photo of Engelbert autocrossing his very green 1971 911T was named the PCA national Porsche Photo of the Week. The photo was accompanied by the text below.

Porsche of the Week Photo by Claudia Muelhaupt. Shenandoah Region.

"Our 1971 911T was completely restored by my husband, Engelbert, nine years ago, and many sheet metal parts were replaced in the process, such as the complete floor, rocker panels, front suspension pan, etc.

"He made the flares, from fiberglass, to fit the 17 x 8– and 17 x 9–inch wheels with Hoosiers sized 245 mm in front and 295 mm at the rear.

"He runs the car in F–Prepared in SCCA class and in Improved Porsche in PCA with the Shenandoah Region."

    Congratulations to both Muelhaupts!

    Jonathan Newhall's
3-wheeler Jonathan Newhall's 3-wheeler Autocross #1 at Verona
by Jim Condon       Posted 2018 May 17

For our first autocross on May 12, designer Rick Ebinger squeezed a lot of mileage into the limited area of the main parking lot that we can still use at Verona. His course included two concentric counterclockwise loops, a drag race, a real slalom, a fake slalom, and four transitions between the asphalt and concrete parts of the parking lot. It was fast but long enough that Alex Burkhart took 45.001 seconds to capture the FTD, and Jonathan Newhall had the shortest time in a Porsche — 45.190 seconds. The fastest lady was Langlee King, at 46.642 seconds in Will King's Honda S2000. Jim Condon and Sherry Westfall completed the 2000 mile run-in on their new Cayman GTS just before this autocross and drove it at speed for the first time.

Porsches on the Blue Ridge Parkway Peaks of Otter Tour
by Jim Condon       Posted 2018 May 14

Dan Kuchenberg and Jason Wavell organized a very successful tour along the Blue Ridge Parkway on April 28. It started at the the Humpback Rocks visitor center, made a short detour for a pit stop at Montebello (the "facilities" at the Humpback Rocks visitor center were still closed for the winter), and ended at the Peaks of Otter visitor center and restaurant. Most importantly, Dan made sure to pick a perfect sunny spring day so the Boxster and Cab drivers could go topless. The trees ranged from nearly bare at the highest altitudes to still blooming somewhat lower to green and leafy in the lowest gaps.

To see the photo gallery covering this event, click here. The oldest car was Alex Sullivan's red 1966 911T, and there were two red air-cooled Carreras. A Panamera, a Cayenne, and a Macan represented the four-door contingent. Check out the photo Larry Markley's beautiful 997 Turbo S Cab with the XOTK license plate.

Purely by coincidence, at the Peaks of Otter we encountered an independent PCA tour led by Vic and TJ Friedman from the Hurricane Region. They handed out chocolate gold "coins" with the Porsche Crest to Shenandoah members.

After lunch we drove home our separate ways, and Sherry Westfall discovered a number of Trilliums blooming by the road near Petites Gap, about 10 miles north of the Peaks of Otter (see the final photo in the gallery).

    2018 Autocross School at Verona
by Jim Condon       Posted 2018 May 5

To see the photo gallery from this event, click here.

The 2018 autocross school began on a nice bright sunshiny April 14 morning following an unusually cold and gray early spring. Rick Ebinger brought his new and very green truck with the autocross supplies box and set up an autocross course marked with numerous cones and flour lines to guide novice drivers. Professor Ebinger also delivered the autocross lecture and led the track walk for autocross students.

Two exercises were set up inside the autocross course: a braking box and a slalom. Drivers were separated into two groups so both exercises could be run simultaneously. That left enough time that everybody got many runs on the full autocross course during the afternoon. Erik Boody set up the starting lights and timer so drivers could monitor their progress, but no times were recorded. The first "official" autocross at Verona is scheduled for May 12.

    Dorn's Body & Paint, Mechanicsville Tech Session—Dorn's Body & Paint, Feb 24, 2018
by John Odden          Posted 2018 March 1

Barry Dorn, Vice President of Dorn's Body & Paint greeted 16 Shenandoah Region members with coffee and a bountiful array of pastries for an introduction to the advanced elements of collision repair of premium vehicles. Dorn's Body & Paint is one of two Porsche Factory Certified repair centers in Virginia and the only one in central Virginia. Dorn's is also factory certified for Tesla, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo. Factory certification requires extensive personnel training and a broad investment in equipment to meet manufacturer's specifications.

To see the photo gallery from this event, click here.

We were presented with the complexities of working with the combination of a steel structure and aluminum panels. Due to galvanic action of dissimilar metals, the two materials cannot come in contact with each other. Very specialized bonding materials must be used to insure the two materials do not interact. With the increased government mandated mileage requirements of motor vehicles, the automobile manufacturers are using more aluminum to reduce weight and increase fuel economy. We learned that there are very few collision repair operations that have the ability to work with aluminum. An interesting point with aluminum is that it has no "memory" whereas steel has memory. Steel is inclined to resume its original stamped shape and aluminum does not. This makes repair of aluminum a very challenging undertaking.

We had the opportunity to view a current model Range Rover which is all aluminum including the frame rails. The vehicle had a front end collision which damaged the initial 18 inches of aluminum frame rail. The engine and transmission required removal to perform the repair. Dorn's cut out the damaged portion and welded new aluminum frame rails to the existing frame. This required, in additional to aluminum welding, eight different factory specified rivets and a special bonding compound manufactured by 3M which is only available for purchase from the UK. The Range Rover was on a special jig to insure proper alignment of the frame. The repair cost for this vehicle was approximately $50,000.

All in attendance received a very detailed education on the sensors that current automobiles have. These include backup cameras, distance detectors, blind spot monitors, and adaptive cruise control. Barry Dorn, who is on many national collision-repair boards and councils, shared with us that the paint thickness is a critical component for these sensors to function properly after a repair. An additional layer of paint can make a sensor inoperable. Paint thickness is now a critical component to collision repair. The sensing safely systems in current automobiles are called ADAS, Advance Driver Assist Systems. After a collision repair, it requires twelve hours of calibration to recalibrate all of these safety systems. Porsche, Audi, Tesla, and Mercedes Benz are the leading manufacturers providing these advanced systems.

A common maintenance service to prolong tire life and reduce wear is a front-end alignment. Barry shared the common service provided is typically "toe and go". The two other critical adjustments besides toe adjustment are castor and camber. Today's cars monitor the steering angle through a Steering Angle Inclination Sensor. These sensors must be reset after each front-end alignment. Not having these important sensors reset to the new settings can cause a vehicle rollover in a crash-avoidance maneuver. How many shops actually address the Steering Inclination Sensor? Less than 1% have the equipment to perform this very important component of a front-end alignment.

We were treated to a delicious lunch from Panera Bread and our choice of YETI thermal mugs with the Dorn's Body and Paint logo and Porsche Collision Repair Center embossed on them. Flow Porsche provided a beautiful 2018 metallic gray Porsche Panamera for us to view during our session at Dorn's.

Daniel Wendell polishing Steve Upman's Carrera Tech Session at Automotive Aesthetic
by Jim Condon          Posted 2018 January 24

Daniel Wendell, the owner of Automotive Aesthetic in Charlottesville, opened his shop to a large contingent of Shenandoah PCA members and other "car guys" for a tech session on January 20. Daniel is a lifelong PCA member from a PCA family.

To see the photo gallery from this event, click here.

After gathering for coffee, donuts, and talk, we sat down and learned about detailing from Daniel. He covered the three stages of detailing: (1) decontamination, (2) rejuvenation, and (3) preservation. For decontamination (washing) he recommended the "three bucket" system. The first bucket is for wheels, which should be done first because they are usually the dirtiest part of the car. He uses special chemicals that attack the iron in brake dust, dissolving it into a red liquid that can be rinsed or wiped off with a soft brush. For washing the paint he uses separate "clean" and "dirty" buckets with plastic grids on the bottom where dirt can settle out. This reduces the chance of adding swirl marks to the paint by washing it with a dirty mitt. For drying he uses a blow dryer or a thick microfiber towel.

The second stage is rejuvenation — polishing, removing scratches, correcting paint flaws, etc. Knowing how to do this and having the right tools (e.g., orbital polishers, paint depth gauges) is important, and is often best left to the pros.

The third and final stage is protection, which can be anything from simple waxing to applying "glass" or "ceramic" coating to covering with plastic film. Daniel recommends carnuba wax primarily for show cars and garage queens because it is not very durable. He also applies Modesta glass coatings and plastic films. His takeaway message is that the skill of the person doing this work is critical.

After a question-and-answer session, Daniel demonstrated polishing on Steve Upman's 911 Carrera. Daniel also rents garage space for people to store their cars. For example, Dave Lasch stores his recently restored 356SC there because he doesn't have a suitable garage at home.

The tech session concluded with pizza and drinks for all.

Pat Daily — Celebration of Life
by Jim Condon          Posted 2017 December 18

A celebration of long-time Shenandoah Region member Pat Daily's life was held on December 17 at 2:00 PM at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond. Click here to see photos from this event.

Pat's wife Sandie, his daughter Shannon, and his Porsche friend Dick Pitman recalled different aspects of Pat's full life and many contributions to his family, his friends, and his country. Others who spoke included his brother and sister, his son-in-law Hamilton, a business associate, and a member of his model airplane club. After this celebration of life, Pat was honored by the U.S. Navy at the Virginia War Memorial, after which the flag shown at the left was presented to Sandie.

Pat's 1963 356B was parked outside and will pass into the care of Shannon and Hamilton. Shenandoah Region members present included Dick Pitman, Alex & Gail Smith, Bruce Russell, Deane Parker, Hank Weil, John Odden, Jim Condon, and Sherry Westfall.

Pat with "Fast Frieda" at the 2009 RPM concours    Remembering Pat Daily
by Dick Pitman        Posted 2017 December 12

Pat was introduced to me over 20 years ago by a Retired USMC Aviator who worked with Pat at UNOS. Pat was the "Executive Director for Operations" at the "United Network For Organ Sharing" in Richmond. My friend said, "Pat has a car like yours"—meaning a 356! OK, I'm in!

Pat had retired from the US Navy Medical Service Corps as a Captain (0-7). His last command was as the Commanding Officer of the US Naval Hospital Subic Bay Philippines. One evening he and his bride Sandie were out for supper and he struck up a conversation with their waitress. He asked her where she was born and she told him, "Naval Hospital Subic Bay"! Pat said, "When you go home I want you to look at your birth certificate and see if Capt Pat Daily signed it."

    Autocrossing at Southside Speedway

My Marine pilot friend, Pat, and I had lunch one day, driving our 356s so we could see each other's. Pat said, "You have to come to RPM!" I said "Whats that?" "Richmond Porsche Meet, dummy, it's at Alex Smith's place." OK, sounds like fun if there are more Porsches like ours! "You'll love it" and I did.

So thats how our friendship started! How could you not have a friend with such a big smile and outgoing personality?

Pat would auto cross FAST FRIEDA at Southside Race Track on the Sunday mornings after the RPM Concours and really got it going. Pat loved to drive his Heron Grey, NOT WHITE, 1963 356B Coupe. He would lead the driving tours after the Concours at Alex's with me in trail behind him, with a bad valve, pedalling like crazy trying to keep up.

You couldn't miss Pat's car with the badges. Lately Pat's passions went to building and flying scale model radio controlled airplanes with a group named "Maxecuters." These were and are truly works of art. They would fly them at Mike Dale's place in Remington. Mike was a former RAF pilot and retired President of Jaguar North America. I am truly sorry I never went up there with Pat, always too busy!

Robert Overholser did a very nice tribute to Pat on the Monday after Pat's passing. I noticed if you scroll down there is a comment from Shannon, Pat and Sandie's daughter. They were both very proud of their lawyer, horsewoman daughter who was recently named as one of Richmond's "Top 40 Under 40" in Style Weekly's 2017 listing.

The past few weeks we would see each other at the Richmond Cars and Coffee. Of course the other 356ers and Porsche folks like Sean Rooks, Greg Snell, Engelbert, Chris O, and sometimes Eric would show up. It was only at the last C&C did we all see each other and Pat was having a great time talking to folks and taking pictures as he always did.

If you didn't know Pat in the first 30 seconds of meeting him, you soon would and be ever more glad that you did.

We will all miss so very much him. A true gentleman, professional, loving husband, father and friend. God Bless and Fair Winds Pat!

    Michie Tavern
Annual Holiday Party at Michie Tavern
by Jim Kaczorowski          Posted 2017 December 7

'Twas the night of our party and all 'bout the roadhouse,
not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
Pineapple garlands were hung by the chimneys with care,
in hopes that Porschephiles soon would be there.

Volunteers were all snuggled so as not to be frozen,
with tickets for raffle gifts soon to be chosen.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
that Hank sprang from his seat to see what was the matter.
When what to his wondering eyes should appear...
but a chorus of members bringing lots of good cheer.

With a number of drivers so lively and quick,
he knew in an instant they'd love prizes to pick.
A bundle of toys they held tight to their chest —
which Marines would deliver 'til no one could rest.

Then the bar got abuzz with drinks and with beer,
with talk of cars and the holiday now drawing so near.

Our meal was traditional with chicken and pork —
so tender and good, cut with only a fork.

    Sherry Westfall & Rick Ebinger
Then Santa appeared, a real jolly old elf,
and we laughed when we saw him in spite of our self.
He spoke not a word and went straight to his work —
giving a prize from each container for a Porsche...not a Merc.

And laying a finger aside of his nose,
a spare seat at a table he so happily chose.

Rick gave prizes to best racers by class,
to let Hank tout honored guests: both "laddie" and "lass."

When all was done and applause had been given,
I heard Hank exclaim ere we roared out of sight:
Happy Holiday & Merry Christmas! ...and to all a good night!

    ('til next year my friends)
